Revelation 20:7-10: The Final Defeat of Satan

Evil’s final strategy is the same as its first strategy: deception. When Satan is released, he gathers the nations, but Revelation shows that even this final rebellion remains under God’s limit and ends in God’s victory. After the thousand years are completed, Satan is released from his prison and goes out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for war (Rev 20:7–8). This is the same pattern Revelation has shown again and again. The release of Satan happens only after the thousand years are completed (Rev 20:7). This matters because Satan is never shown as sovereign over the timing after he was bound, thrown into the abyss.

Even in his final rebellion, Satan remains under divine limit. His first act is deception. This has been his character from the beginning. He is the serpent of old who deceived Eve in the garden (Gen 3:1–15; Rev 12:9). He is the dragon who deceives the whole world (Rev 12:9). He works through the beast, the false prophet, Babylon, counterfeit signs, false worship, and the intoxication of the nations (Rev 13:1–18; 16:13–14; 17:1–6; 18:3). When Satan is released, he does what he has always done. He lies, gathers, and leads the nations into rebellion against God. The names Gog and Magog come from Ezekiel 38–39. In Ezekiel, Gog of the land of Magog comes from the north with a vast coalition against God’s restored people (Ezek 38:1–16). The attack looks overwhelming, but God intervenes in judgment so that His holiness is known among the nations (Ezek 38:18–23; 39:1–8). Revelation takes that prophetic image and uses it for the final gathering of hostile nations. Gog and Magog become the symbolic name for the last great rebellion of the nations under satanic deception.

This scene likely recapitulates the same final conflict already shown from other angles. The sixth bowl showed demonic spirits going out from the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet to gather the kings of the whole world for the war of the great day of God Almighty, at the place called Armageddon (Rev 16:13–16). Revelation 19 showed the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered to make war against the rider on the white horse, only to be defeated by Christ (Rev 19:19–21). Revelation 20 now shows the same final hostility from the angle of Satan himself. The earlier vision emphasized the beast and false prophet. This vision emphasizes the dragon who stood behind them. It completes the arc that began in Genesis. The serpent deceived the woman, but God promised that the woman’s seed would crush the serpent’s head (Gen 3:15). Revelation 12 showed the dragon trying to devour the male child, but the child was caught up to God and to His throne (Rev 12:4–5). Revelation 13 showed the dragon empowering the beast. Revelation 16 showed demonic spirits gathering the nations. Revelation 19 showed Christ defeating the beast and false prophet, and Revelation 20 shows Satan himself cast into final judgment.
