1 Corinthians 12:1-7: The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts

Blaize

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:1-7

Diversity can be a good thing when applied correctly, but the Corinthians struggled with their diversity, especially in their spiritual giftedness. These verses emphasize the diversity of spiritual gifts within the Christian community. Paul starts by reminding them not to be ignorant concerning spiritual matters. When the Corinthians were pagans, they were led astray by idols, but now as believers, they are guided by the Spirit of God. Because of this, they should honor the various spiritual gifts, which are distributed by the same Spirit to each member for the common good. Each believer plays a unique and valuable role within the spiritual body.

The comparison between "Jesus is accursed" and "Jesus is Lord" (v. 3) here is interesting. It represents a significant spiritual divide between those that know Christ and those that do not. The Holy Spirit plays a central role in guiding individuals toward recognizing Christ's lordship and experiencing the transformative power of faith in Him. When a person comes to believe that "Jesus is Lord," it is the work of the Holy Spirit, because it’s the Spirit illuminates their heart and mind. The Holy Spirit also empowers believers to live in accordance with this confession.

This Spirit-enabling work is essential to understanding the point Paul is making concerning the purpose of spiritual gifts (vv. 4-5). These verses emphasize the interconnectedness of the Trinity in the functioning of the Church. Despite the diversity of spiritual gifts, ministries, and their effects, they all ultimately flow from the triune God and are meant to work together for the edification of the Church and the fulfillment of God's purposes. These verses encourage believers to appreciate and respect the various roles and gifts within the body of Christ while recognizing the unity and divine source that underlie them all.

By comparing the diversity of gifts to the interworking of the Trinity, Paul is illustrating something profound. In the same way that the members of the Trinity function in perfect harmony, so too, Spirit-imbued gifts function for the common good. Spiritual gifts are not isolated abilities but are meant to function together synergistically, serving the common good by meeting various needs, building up believers, and advancing the mission of the Church. The next devotional will delve into the list of spiritual gifts, but this fundamental understanding of the nature of gifts is important to underscore how they work. Paul gets into this in other ways in the following chapters too. All in all, every believer has giftings, and with them, the believer can work toward the common good of the entire church, both locally and universally.

Lord, help me use my giftings for the common good!
