1 Corinthians 12:8-10: Different Spiritual Gifts

Blaize

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:8-10

While Paul lists gifts here, he emphasized before the list that the diversity of gifts within the body of Christ comes from the Holy Spirit and is for the common good of the church. Another passage in Romans 12:6-8 lists another set of gifts. Paul emphasizes here that these gifts vary among believers and are meant to be used according to the grace given to everyone for the edification of the Church. Gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 include:

Words of Wisdom: This gift involves the ability to provide practical and godly advice, guidance, and insights in challenging situations. It helps believers make wise decisions in line with God's will.

Words of Knowledge: This gift enables a person to have knowledge or insight into specific situations or issues that they wouldn't naturally know. It can involve revelation about God's plan or understanding of spiritual truths.

Faith: This gift is marked by an extraordinary level of trust and confidence in God, even in challenging circumstances. It often inspires and encourages others to trust in God's promises.

Healing: The gift of healing involves the supernatural ability to restore health to those who are sick or suffering. It can encompass physical, emotional, or spiritual healing.

Miracles: This gift allows individuals to perform extraordinary and supernatural acts that go beyond the laws of nature. Miracles serve as signs and wonders that validate the presence and power of God.

Prophecy: Prophetic gifts involve speaking forth messages from God. It can include foretelling (predicting future events) and forthtelling (communicating God's word and truth) to edify, encourage, and console believers.

Discernment of Spirits: This gift enables believers to perceive and understand the spiritual realm, including discerning whether a spirit or influence is from God, human, or demonic. It helps protect the church from deception.

Tongues (Speaking in Tongues): Speaking in tongues involves the supernatural ability to speak in languages not known to the speaker used for prayer, worship, or prophecy.

Interpretation of Tongues: This gift accompanies the gift of tongues and allows someone to interpret and explain the meaning of a message spoken in tongues so that others can understand and benefit from it.

Gifts listed in Romans 12:6-8 include:

Prophecy: Like the gift of prophecy in 1 Corinthians, this gift involves speaking forth messages from God to encourage, edify, and comfort believers.

Serving: The gift of serving involves a strong desire and ability to meet the practical needs of others within the church and the broader community. Those with this gift often have a heart for helping and assisting.

Teaching: This gift equips individuals to effectively communicate and explain God's Word, making it understandable and applicable to others.

Exhortation (Encouragement): Those with this gift can provide comfort, encouragement, and motivation to others. They can inspire others to persevere in faith and good works.

Giving: This gift involves a willingness and desire to generously share material resources, finances, and possessions with others. Givers do so with a cheerful and generous heart.

Leadership (Administration): This gift individuals to lead and manage various aspects of the church or ministries effectively. They provide guidance, direction, and organization.

Showing Mercy (Compassion): People with this gift have a deep sense of empathy and compassion for those who are suffering or in need. They offer comfort, support, and practical help to those who are hurting.

In 1 Peter 4:10-11, Peter encourages believers to use the gifts they have received to serve one another as good stewards of God's grace. He emphasizes that these gifts should be employed in a way that glorifies God. If one has never explored one’s giftings before, it’s something that is usually easy to determine. After a person is saved, that person finds themselves gravitating towards a specific role in ministry that uses one of the gifts. For some, they just love to help people, and such would be the gift of service. For others, they love to brighten people’s day, and such would be the gift of encouragement. Others find it easy to share generously with others, and such would be the gift of giving. Whatever a gifting may be, know it is from the Spirit and how it fits into the local church is key. In doing so, one will find fulfillment and joy in bringing about the common good of the church.

Lord, help me to know my gifting so I can glorify You!
